Clove&Clive HongBao

Culturally, red packets, or hongbao (angpow) as it is commonly known in Chinese, have been a necessity during the Lunar New Year. When I was young, I used to ponder upon the significance of the red packet and have many a time downplayed the act of giving red packets as unnecessary and ingenuine, when in fact this thinking was just a reflection of my own ignorance and arrogance. It was only years later that I realised the act of giving red packets is auspicious, that is, having the purpose of starting the new year with goodness and what better way to start it than with generosity, sharing our wealth! As in any cultural event, the genuine purpose of this ancient tradition got lost along the way and the hongbao became perceived as a burden to many.

The act of giving is key to our spiritual journey as it is in generosity that many noble actions unfold themselves – surrender, letting go, trust, willingness, allowing, accepting and many other more associated qualities like patience, endurance, determination etc.

Clove&Clive, in the spirit of making generosity a genuine and joyful act, redefines the hongbao by bestowing auspicious characters to the receiver, an act that allows the receiver to ponder upon the meanings of the word as a start for the New Year or in any auspicious events where the hongbao is used.

There is no better way to acquire these auspicious characters than the ageless wisdom of the I-Ching. Of the total 64 hexagrams in the I-Ching, 10 were chosen to represent auspiciousness in our newly-created hongbao. Each set of 10 hongbao (see below for design) are wrapped beautifully in a gold-stamped packaging and comes in two variations – red and gold. It makes a suitable token or gift for friends and associates.

With love,
TuckLoon

Thus the superior man:
If he sees good, he imitates it;

  Jìn: Prosperity

The Sun rised over the Earth:
The image of Prosperity.
Thus the superior man himself
Brightens his bright virtue.
